Introduction to Content Management Systems PDF Print E-mail

What is content?

Content can come in all kinds of forms; in the simplest case, it is text. However, content can also be a picture, a link, a piece of music, or a combination of all of these.

What is a Content management system (CMS)

A content management system, or CMS, is a computer software system used to publish and organize the joint process of creating and editing text and multimedia documents (content) on a website.

A CMS consists of a front end and a back end.

  • The front end is the website that the visitors and the logged-on users see.
  • The back end, on the other hand, contains the administration layer of the website for the administrators. Configuration, maintenance, cleaning, the generation of statistics, and new content creation are all done in the back end by authorized people. How? Via an intuitive control panel with What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get interfaces to manage your content. This means creating/editing content is as simple as sending an email. Imagine that!

Features (aka extensions)

Features provide additional functionality to your website, this may be the automation of a business process or provide a more interactive way of presenting content to you and/or your visitors. The best part is that these “extensions” can be managed easily, anytime and anywhere.
